August 2026 as a whole sees average to above average rainfall potential for the west, central interior and south. Average to below average rainfall is likely for southeastern parts of the southeast, with drier signals concentrating into eastern districts of NSW, Vic and SE Qld. Near average conditions are expected for the north and much of Queensland. August is expected to feature several NW cloud band features along the favoured rainfall corridor.
Week one August 2026 (30 July – 2 August 2026)

Gusty frontal systems containing very cool S/SW winds with minimal rainfall, focused on far southern districts. High pressure between fronts drives a cool airmass into the southern interior, increasing frost risk for the SA interior, Mallee and Wimmera. Residual SW flow from the late July low delivers a cold surge, patchy showers and snow to alpine regions. Week one is a typically standard pattern for August; wetter signals build in week 2.
Week two August 2026 (6 – 12 August 2026)

Frontal system 6–7th in the SE corner with post-frontal SW onshore flow for WA. Low pressure builds in the Bight 9–10th, increasing onshore/NW flow via the Gascoyne and southern Pilbara while an upper trough enhances the NW cloud band. The 10–12th is the wetter window for SE SA, Vic, Tas and southern/eastern NSW. Post-front cold pool and high pressure bring small hail to exposed southern coasts and snow to the Alps 11–12th. Monitor for a low-latitude NW cloud band stretching from the Gascoyne into SE SA and across Victoria.
Week four (1) August 2026 (14 – 18 August 2026)

The southern feature draws the earlier cloud band into the central interior and SA by the 20th, with focused rain through SA as the NW flow breaks down. The NWCB breaks down around the 21st, followed by gusty, cold SW flow 21–25th affecting southern districts. A front deepens in the Bight on the 20th moving towards SW Vic, with showers for southern coastal districts.
Week four (2) August 2026 (27 August – 1 September 2026)

A complex low builds SW of WA from mid week four, moving onshore by the 27th. Damaging winds are likely for the SW corner and interior, accompanied by a cloud band via the NW. An inland trough deepens and draws moisture into the central interior, with focused rain across the SW interior into SA, western Vic and western NSW. This is the wettest period of August, lasting around five days west to east. The high moves into the SE/Tasman 28–30th, with NE winds interacting with approaching NW winds resulting in severe thunderstorm and heavier rainfall opportunity. The cloud band developing in the northern interior deepens late week four into early September.

Primary national wet window. A complex low moves onshore in WA by the 27th with damaging wind risk for the SW corner, while a deepening inland trough draws moisture into the central interior. Rain expands from WA into SA, western VIC and western NSW over about five days. NE winds interacting ahead of the trough support the first spring-type storms, isolated but locally intense.
